The best golf

Course pedigree, scored from national and state ranking lists, championships the club has hosted, the architect of record, and the size of the property. Clubs whose course we have not documented are left off rather than guessed at.

How this is calculated

Out of ten. A base of 3.6, then up to 3.6 for position on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest — scaled by the actual ranking, so No. 4 scores well above No. 95 — or a flat 1.9 for a Golfweek, Golf Magazine or Links list and 1.3 for a state ranking. Up to 1.4 for championships hosted, with majors weighted above amateur events. Up to 1.0 for an architect of record from the canon — Tillinghast, Raynor, Macdonald, Ross, Flynn, Travis, Emmet, Banks, Maxwell, Colt, Coore, Doak, Fazio, Trent Jones. Up to 0.4 for 27 or 36 holes. A club we have not documented is left off the board, not scored at zero.
